Indexical Presuppositions of Pronominal Gender Features

چکیده
Gender features on anaphoric pronouns are often analyzed as presupposition triggers, after [Cooper, 1983]. I argue that, first, “presuppositions” arising in sentences with gendered pronouns have a peculiar projection behavior different from that of regular presuppositions, and second, that such special indexical presuppositions, rather than being contributed by morphological features directly, arise because of a rule-of-use constraint requiring the pronominal gender feature to match “the real gender” of the pronoun’s referent if the referent is human.

Perception of speaker social-indexical information from localised phonetic variants
The present paper investigates perceptions of speaker social-indexical information, including gender, age and social-class, from smaller phonetic segments such as gender-correlated phonetic variants. Since fundamental frequency (F0) is not the only cue to speaker gender identification, the perceptions are examined using gender-ambiguous sounding speech. The results of the study show that while ...
متن کاملWhat Does Language Remember?: Indexical Inversion and the Naturalized History of Japanese Women
This article explores the production of naturalized temporality and its ideological effects by focusing on the semiotic process of indexical order. Linguistic practice is linked with the exercise of power not only by constructing intersubjective social reality in an ongoing communicative process, but also, and perhaps more powerfully, by constructing an historical narrative that logically unfol...
متن کاملPhonetic cues, indexical fields, and the perception of gender and sexual orientation
Eckert (2008) asserts, based on empirical findings, that cues exist within indexical fields: Each cue is indexed with multiple potential meanings, one of which is activated by the perspective of the listener as well as the context and content of the utterance. What is less established is how multiple cues, indexed with inter-related potential meanings, are effectuated. For example, when three d...
متن کاملThe production of pronominal clitics: Implications for theories of lexical access
In three experiments we investigated the locus of the frequency effect in lexical access and the mechanism of gender feature selection. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to produce gender-marked verb plus pronominal clitic utterances in Italian (e.g., ‘‘portalo’’ (bring it [masculine]) in response to a written verb and pictured object. We found that pronominal clitic production is sensit...
متن کاملDiscourse Processing in MT: Problems in Pronominal Translation
1. Intrcnluction Translation of anaphoric expressions has been problematic in most of the MT systems (Key 1986). One ot' the main reasons for the difficulties lies in the lack of discourse information representation in the MT systems. In this paper, we report an implementation of the Discourse Representation Theory in an LFG-based Engl ishto-Japanese MT program, and discuss problems in translat...
